HUMAN 1030 - DIGITAL HUMANITIES Minimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 Texts hide secrets from us humans that are manifestly obvious to computers: all we need to do is crack the code. This course teaches students with zero coding experience to use computers to reveal hidden insights from digitized texts. Students will learn to make those texts “speak” by transforming them into dynamic visuals and interactive websites: in this manner, Hamlet becomes a chart of gender-coded language; a history of Rome becomes a map of the empire’s most frequently referenced battles; and much more. Over the course of the semester, students will apply digital methods to a research project of their own choosing. In addition to adding a valuable tool to their research repertoire, students will leave with coding and web design skills highly sought after in other career contexts.
