Completion of the following courses for a letter grade:
- Natural Sciences or Psychology, 6 credits
- Humanities or Social Sciences, 6 credits
- Oral or Written Communication*, 6 credits
- Mathematics or Statistics or Computer Science, 4 credits
- Additional credits from above content areas, 8 credits
*Accepted Oral Communications Courses: COMMRC 0500, 0510, 0520, 0530, 0540, 0550. Accepted Written Communication Courses are ENGMCP 0200 or higher, or any intensive writing (W) course.

Junior Applicants
Application Deadline: March 15. If spots are available after the deadline, applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the class is full. There is space for 48 juniors.

Transfer Students
Transfer students must apply to the University of Pittsburgh by completing the Office of Admission and Financial Aid’s Transfer Application and selecting Emergency Medicine as their intended field of study. International transfer students click here.
All applicants must:
- Submit a one- to two-page personal essay discussing how you became interested in the field, any work or volunteer experience you have that demonstrates your awareness of the field, and your long-term professional goals. Also include other areas of interest, extracurricular activities, and leadership experiences;
- Submit one letter of recommendation: college instructor or supervisor preferred;
- Submit official transcripts from all institutions from which they have college credits. Current University of Pittsburgh students do not need to provide their University of Pittsburgh transcript, and can request copies of transcripts previously submitted to Pitt from their current school. Students currently at the Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences can obtain copies of non-Pitt transcripts from the Office of Student Records, 140 Thackeray Hall, and drop them off in the SHRS Admissions Office, 4020 Forbes Tower;
- Have a personal interview with the emergency medicine faculty;
- Applications can be submitted while course requirements are in progress.
Please note that admission to the program is competitive. Meeting the minimum admission criteria does not guarantee admission.
Additional Information
A non-refundable program fee of $1,500 covering both the fall and spring terms of the junior year will appear on the fall tuition invoice. Student tuition rates for the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences can be found here. This program also requires students to complete clinical education at facilities external to the University, and such facilities will require a criminal background check, an Act 33/34/73 clearance, physical examination, and a drug screen to determine whether the student applicant is qualified to participate in the clinical education. Students are required to maintain health insurance throughout the entire junior year and strongly recommended for senior year. Students are required to purchase and maintain classroom and clinical uniforms. Additionally, in order to become certified/licensed, many states will inquire as to whether the applicant has been convicted of a misdemeanor or a felony.
Senior Applicants
Application Deadline: Rolling
Senior applicants are required to have current certification/licensure as a paramedic and have completed 51 college credits, including the required prerequisite courses. Students are required to earn 30 credits at the University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. These 30 credits may not include prerequisite courses. All senior applicants will be offered a 3-credit online EM course each semester to fulfill the 30-credit requirement (Beyond the Body will be offered in the fall semester, and Organizational Theory will be offered in the spring). Students may take other 3-credit courses within SHRS (which might not be online) each semester to fulfill the 30-credit requirement.

Currently Serving Active Duty Military Applicants

Currently Serving Military (ADM) applicants are required to have current certification/licensure as a paramedic, ATP, or equivalent. Applicants must have completed 51 college credits, including prerequisite courses. Students are required to earn 30 credits at the University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. These 30 credits may not include prerequisite courses. All Active Duty Military students will be offered a 3-credit EM elective each semester to fulfill the 30-credit requirement (Beyond the Body will be offered in the fall semester, and Organizational Theory will be offered in the spring).
