This program will lead students to be certified in special education PK-12. Like other Pitt-Greensburg education programs, this special education program seeks to marry in field experiences with coursework, thereby increasing the transfer of learning from education courses and promoting best practices in the field.
Like in our other education majors, the special education majors will take similar courses in their first two years of university: social foundations,strategies and techniques of instruction, early field, education of exceptional students I; each of these courses have field experiences attached to them, allowing students to conclude early whether teaching special education is right for them. Further, like other education majors, these special education majors would then need to apply to "upper level" by holding at least a 2.8 GPA, passing the state-mandated basic skills tests, and having the necessary grades in their education courses.
Once admitted into upper level, special education majors would take the bulk of their special education course. Some of these courses are courses already offered at Pitt-Greensburg (like Applied Behavioral Analysis) or Assessment in Education (which would be tweaked to include more special education focus). Overall, there would be six new classes offered including Contemporary Issues and Procedures in Special Education, Collaboration and Transitions, Methods and Strategies of English/Langauge Arts, Methods and Strategies of Content Instruction, Classroom and Behavioral Management, and Adaptations and Assistive Technology.
